Hive Colab is Uganda's leading technology hub and accelerator based in Kampala, running periodic cohort-based acceleration programmes for early-stage tech startups. How applications are selected

Hive Colab assesses applications based on team capability, technology feasibility, market relevance to Uganda, and founder commitment. Shortlisted teams are invited for interviews where panel members evaluate your understanding of your problem, traction to date, and readiness for an intensive cohort. Selected founders are notified and begin the acceleration programme, which includes weekly workshops, one-on-one mentorship, and regular investor pitches.

What reviewers look for

  • Show concrete evidence of a real problem—customer interviews, survey data, or early user sign-ups count more than assumed demand
  • Highlight the technical skills in your team; Hive Colab prefers at least one founder with product, engineering, or data capability
  • Explain why your solution matters to Uganda's market specifically, not just East Africa or Africa generally
  • Demonstrate commitment: founders who are working on this full-time and have skin in the game (co-invested time, personal savings) are favoured
  • Be clear on what stage you are at—a working prototype or MVP is stronger than a deck alone, but ideas with strong teams are still considered

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to be registered as a company to apply?

Not always. Early-stage teams with just an idea can apply, but you will need to show proof of business existence or incorporation before joining the programme.

What if I am outside Kampala—can I still apply?

You can apply, but you must be able to relocate to Kampala for the duration of the accelerator. The programme is cohort-based and requires in-person attendance.

Is the $5,000 a grant or a loan?

It is a non-equity grant or stipend to support product development. You do not repay it and Hive Colab does not take equity.

How long does the programme last?

The source does not state the exact duration. Contact Hive Colab directly for the timeline of the cohort you are applying to.

Do I need a business plan or just a pitch deck?

A one-page summary or pitch deck is usually sufficient for the application stage. A full business plan is typically not required upfront.
