About this opportunity

IFC SME Ventures is a $500,000–$3m equity investment fund for high-growth SMEs in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and five other African countries. You need ₦200m–₦750m+ in annual revenue and a scalable model to qualify.

IFC SME Ventures is a blended-finance equity fund that invests directly into high-growth SMEs and SME-focused funds across Sub-Saharan Africa, with a focus on fragile and frontier markets. It provides patient equity capital to businesses that are too large for microfinance but too small for mainstream private equity. Target sectors include agribusiness, healthcare, education, financial services, and climate-smart enterprises.

How applications are selected

IFC SME Ventures does not receive or assess applications directly. Instead, you apply to one of 23 private equity fund managers in the platform—each with their own investment criteria, timelines and decision processes. The fund managers look for businesses with clear revenue traction, experienced founders, scalable models and compliance with environmental and social standards. Decisions typically take 3–6 months from initial pitch to term sheet. Once a fund manager commits, they provide not just capital but also board seats, network access and operational advisory.

What reviewers look for

  • Fund managers prioritise verifiable revenue and customer traction over projections; bring your last two years of bank statements and customer contracts
  • Demonstrate that your business model works in a frontier or emerging market—local insight and supply-chain resilience matter more than global comparables
  • Show a capable management team with relevant sector experience; founder-only teams with no operating track record are harder to back
  • Address environmental and social risk upfront; if you operate in agriculture or extractives, explain your sustainability approach clearly
  • Have a clear story about why you need equity rather than debt; IFC backs businesses that are too large for bank loans but too small for traditional PE

Frequently asked questions

Do I apply to IFC or to a fund manager?

You apply to a fund manager. IFC established and funds the platform, but the 23 portfolio fund managers—such as Adiwale Partners, Capria Ventures or SEAF—make all investment decisions. Choose a manager whose ticket size and sector focus match your business.

What is the typical investment size?

IFC SME Ventures invests between $500,000 and $3 million per deal. If you need less than $500,000, you are likely below the revenue threshold and should explore microfinance or commercial bank options instead.

How long does the process take from application to funding?

Typically 3–6 months, depending on the fund manager and the complexity of due diligence. You should expect requests for additional information, site visits and reference calls before a term sheet is offered.

If I take this investment, how much equity do I lose?

That depends on your valuation and the fund manager's terms. IFC typically invests via equity or quasi-equity (such as convertible debt), so you should be prepared to dilute your ownership. This varies widely by deal.

What if my business is in a sector not listed—say, retail or real estate?

IFC SME Ventures focuses on agriculture, technology, education, healthcare, financial services and climate-smart enterprises. Other sectors fall outside the mandate, though some fund managers may consider adjacent opportunities. Contact them to ask.
