Agriculture grants and loans in Africa: AGRA, IFAD, USAID Feed the Future, FAO and local banks

Agriculture is the best-funded sector on the continent. Here are the main programmes, what they fund, and how agribusinesses qualify.

If you farm, process, store, transport or sell food, you are in the sector with the most funding options in Africa. Programmes range from $2,000 smallholder grants to multi-million-dollar agribusiness investment funds.

The main channels

  • AGRA — grants for agricultural transformation projects across a dozen African countries, often through consortia and agro-dealers
  • IFAD — rural development and agri-SME financing, usually delivered with ministries of agriculture
  • USAID Feed the Future — agribusiness investment funds in Nigeria, Kenya, Ethiopia and others; matching grants for processors and aggregators
  • FAO — partnerships and grants for food systems, agroecology and climate adaptation
  • GIZ and SNV — private-sector development windows for agri-SMEs in Ghana, Rwanda, Ethiopia
  • National banks — NIRSAL MFB and CBN AGSMEIS in Nigeria, the Youth and Women Enterprise Funds in Kenya, IDC in South Africa

What agribusiness funders check

Production data (yields, hectares, volumes), buyer relationships (off-take letters, market contracts), climate and gender angles, and a cash flow that follows the season. Smallholder-facing businesses score higher when they show how many farmers they reach and how much farmer income rises.

Prepare your agribusiness pack

Generate a business plan with season-based financials (generator), score it (Readiness Score), then browse the agriculture funding page or your country’s page — e.g. Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana.
