How applications are selected

The African Development Bank and Global Center on Adaptation review applications against climate adaptation impact, business viability, team capacity, and job creation potential. The programme aims for 50% women representation across cohorts. Shortlisted applicants typically undergo further evaluation including pitch presentations. Selected winners receive the grant, business training, technical support, and mentoring over 12 months.

What reviewers look for

  • Demonstrate genuine climate adaptation impact—not just general sustainability or green business. Show how your solution helps communities adapt to climate risks (floods, drought, heat, etc.).
  • Prove your revenue model works. Two years of actual sales or service delivery matters more than projections. Reviewers want to fund businesses already generating income.
  • Show job creation clearly. State how many people you employ now and how the grant will help you hire more. The programme's core goal is adaptation jobs.
  • If your team is female-led or has significant female representation, highlight this. The programme targets 50% women mainstreaming and reviews this actively.
  • Detail your scaling plan. Explain what the $100,000 will fund (staff, equipment, market expansion, etc.) and how it will grow your revenue and impact in the next 12 months.

Frequently asked questions

Does my business need to be a registered company or can it be a sole proprietorship?

Your business must be legally registered in an African country. The sources do not specify company type, so check the application portal or contact the programme directly.

I am 36 years old but founded my business with a 28-year-old co-founder. Can we apply?

The programme targets youth-led and youth-owned enterprises aged 18–35. You will need to clarify with the programme whether co-founder age rules apply or if the lead applicant must meet the age requirement. Contact joep.verhagen@gca.org to confirm.

What if my business has been trading for only 18 months?

You are not eligible. The minimum requirement is 2 years of revenue-generating operations. You can reapply once you reach 2 years of trading.

I am based in Nigeria. Do I have a better chance because Nigeria is a priority country?

The 2025 in-country edition gave priority to Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda and Tanzania, meaning those countries may have had dedicated funding or intake rounds. Apply during your country's cycle. Check the application portal for current deadlines.

What happens after I receive the grant?

Winners join a 12-month accelerator and mentoring programme. You receive business skills training, technical support for your climate solution, and access to a network of mentors and other entrepreneurs. The grant is designed to fund your scaling efforts during this period.

Guide written from the official programme page on 15 October 2026. Funders change their rules, so confirm the details on the official page before you apply.
