How applications are selected

Concept notes are scored against selection criteria and reviewed by a Technical Review Committee. Shortlisted applicants then develop detailed business plans; these are evaluated with emphasis on impact on women and youth, scalability, and additionality. The Investment Committee makes final award decisions. The entire process typically spans several months from concept submission to contracting.

What reviewers look for

  • Show clear impact on women and youth—this is explicitly weighted in business plan evaluation
  • Demonstrate genuine potential to scale beyond your pilot market
  • Explain additionality: what would not happen without AECF funding that will happen with it
  • Be specific about which smallholder farmers or rural communities you serve and why they need your solution
  • Show you have skin in the game with committed matching funds or co-investment

Frequently asked questions

Does AECF charge application fees?

No. AECF does not ask for any payment at any point in the application process. If someone asks you for money to apply, it is a scam.

What is the typical timeline from application to funding?

The process has six stages from concept note to implementation. Exact duration varies by competition, but you should expect several months between submission and contracting.

Do I need to be registered as a company before applying?

Yes. You must be a private sector company registered and operating in an eligible African country.

Can I apply if my business is already established and profitable?

Yes, AECF funds SMEs. They are looking for businesses with viable commercial models, not startups only. However, your focus must be on serving smallholder farmers or rural communities.

What sectors does AECF fund?

Agriculture, agribusiness, food processing, and rural development. Your business model must improve food systems, agricultural productivity, or rural livelihoods.
