About this opportunity

Techstars invests $220,000 in early-stage African tech startups for a 13-week mentorship programme, giving you access to 10,000+ global mentors. You must have a working product, paying customers, and be able to work full-time for three months.

Techstars runs dedicated Africa-focused accelerator programmes including Techstars Lagos (in partnership with ARM Labs), offering a 13-week mentorship-driven programme for early-stage African tech startups. Each accepted company receives a $220,000 investment ($20,000 for 5% common stock plus a $200,000 uncapped MFN post-money SAFE), lifetime access to the Techstars global network of 10,000+ mentors and 3,000+ alumni companies, and direct connections to investors. Applications open twice yearly; programmes are currently listed as open on aggregator and official tracking pages.

How to apply, step by step

  1. Visit the official Techstars application portal and locate the Africa-focused programme relevant to your country (e.g. Techstars Lagos if you are in Nigeria)
  2. Complete the online application form with founding team details, business description, and sector information
  3. Upload your pitch deck, product demo, and traction evidence to the portal
  4. Answer programme-specific questions about your market, competitive advantage, and use of the $220,000 investment
  5. Submit your application before the published deadline (Techstars accepts applications on a rolling basis with multiple intake rounds per year)
  6. Monitor your email for updates; shortlisted founders are typically invited to a video interview within 2–4 weeks of submission
Save and track it and we will email you 14 days, 7 days, 3 days, 24 hours and on the morning of the deadline.

How applications are selected

Techstars reviews applications for product maturity, founding team quality, market opportunity, and likelihood of success within the portfolio. Shortlisted teams progress to founder interviews and due diligence. Final decisions are made by the Techstars selection committee. If accepted, you will receive a term sheet and join the next cohort, which runs for 13 weeks with weekly mentor sessions, demo days, and investor networking.

What reviewers look for

  • Emphasise real customer traction: revenue, active users, or signed commitments matter far more than projections
  • Show a founding team with complementary skills (technical, commercial, operational) and a track record of working well together
  • Be specific about how you will use the $220,000—runway extension, product development, hiring, or market expansion
  • Highlight the problem you solve in your sector (fintech, proptech, education, AI) and why your solution is different
  • Avoid pitching an idea without a working product; Techstars explicitly does not fund pre-MVP companies

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to relocate to Lagos (or the host city) for the 13 weeks?

Typically yes—Techstars programmes are in-person and require full-time attendance at the accelerator space. Check the specific programme location (e.g. Techstars Lagos) when you apply.

What if I have co-founders? Do we all need to commit full-time?

Yes. Techstars requires founder commitment for the entire 13-week duration. If you have co-founders, at least the core team must be able to work full-time on the programme.

How much equity does Techstars take for the $220,000?

You receive $20,000 in cash for 5% equity plus a $200,000 uncapped MFN post-money SAFE (Simple Agreement for Future Equity). This protects you if you raise money at a higher valuation later.

When do applications open and close?

Techstars operates on a rolling basis with applications typically opening twice per year. Check the official Techstars website or your country's programme page for exact dates.

Can I apply if my startup is already registered but less than a year old?

Yes, as long as you have a working MVP and customer traction. Techstars focuses on product and team quality, not how long you have been trading.

Guide written from the official programme page on 18 October 2026. Funders change their rules, so confirm the details on the official page before you apply.
