SMEDAN grants and support for MSMEs: what is on offer and how to apply

SMEDAN runs grant, training and equipment-support schemes for micro and small businesses across Nigeria. Here is how to position your business for them.

Updated October 11, 2026 · 1 min read

The Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria is the federal agency for MSMEs. Beyond registration (the SMEDAN Unique Identification Number is itself useful) it runs periodic grant windows, conditional grants with state governments, equipment support and training programmes — often targeting women, youth, persons with disabilities and specific trades.

Typical requirements

  • Nigerian-owned micro or small enterprise, usually with a SMEDAN registration/UIN
  • CAC registration (business name is enough for most schemes)
  • BVN, valid ID and a bank account in the business or owner’s name
  • A short business profile or plan and, for larger grants, financial projections

How to improve your odds

SMEDAN windows receive hundreds of thousands of entries, so completeness and clarity decide. Fill every field, use your real trade and location, upload clean documents, and describe what the grant buys (a grinding machine, a second sewing line, inputs) rather than “expansion”. Keep a one-page profile ready — the general business overview option in GrantPilot produces exactly that, including a funding-readiness checklist.

Open SMEDAN and other federal grant windows are listed on the Nigeria grants page; track them to get reminders before each window closes.
