Grants and funding for women entrepreneurs in Africa (2026)

Women-focused funding is one of the fastest-growing categories: We-Fi, ITC SheTrades, Cartier Women's Initiative, AWIEF, the Women Enterprise Fund and more.

Updated October 6, 2026 · 1 min read

Funders have learned that women-led businesses repay better and create more local jobs, and many programmes are now reserved for or weighted toward them. The main channels in 2026:

  • Loans at concessional rates — the Women Entrepreneurs Finance Initiative (We-Fi) through partner banks, Kenya’s Women Enterprise Fund, women-focused windows at development banks
  • Accelerators & trade programmes — ITC SheTrades, the African Women Entrepreneurship Cooperative, Graça Machel Trust’s Women in Business
  • Awards with cash — Cartier Women’s Initiative, AWIEF Awards, regional pitch competitions
  • Grants — gender-focused windows at UNDP, USADF, GIZ and national MSME agencies

Eligibility patterns

“Women-led” usually means majority-owned (51%+) or a woman as CEO/founder with decision-making control. Registration, a business bank account and 6–24 months of trading are the usual screens; some awards accept pre-revenue businesses with a prototype.

How to stand out

Lead with impact numbers — women employed, households supplied, income increase per customer — alongside commercial numbers. Funders in this category score the two together. The GrantPilot generator writes an impact and SDG section with measurable indicators; score it with the Readiness Score before submitting.
